Stopping the Stigma

Living with epilepsy and hard-to-treat seizures is about more than treatment management. It’s about dignity, visibility, and being seen for one's full story, not the condition. Light Up Epilepsy, a project of UCB, is about not only advancing care but also reshaping conversations. Together, we’re breaking down stigmas, amplifying patient voices, and building a community that shines a light on resilience.

UCB’s programs and resources make that commitment real. From scholarships that open doors and service dogs that foster independence to patient and caregiver support through every step of the treatment journey, UCB provides more than care—we provide connection. Add in real family stories, accessible education, and direct access to trusted treatment, and the message is clear: No one faces epilepsy or hard-to-treat seizures alone.

EMPOWERING PROGRAMS

The programs below are helping to stop stigmas associated with epilepsy by empowering and enabling those living with epilepsy.

CANINE ASSISTANTS

This nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing service dogs to children and adults with epilepsy. Seizure response dogs are trained to retrieve a phone prior to a seizure, summon help in a controlled environment, and stay with their person during a seizure. The dogs not only provide assistance; they can also instill confidence by enabling their recipient to do activities they may be reluctant to do because they have epilepsy. They also provide companionship and contribute to the overall emotional well-being of the person they are placed with.

THE UCB FAMILY EPILEPSY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

This scholarship provides financial support for individuals with epilepsy or family members/caregivers who demonstrate academic and personal achievement.
